Welcome To Our Community
by Michael Donovan
If you're surfing these pages because you're thinking of buying a house and living in Columbus, welcome to our community.
The World Dictionary defines 'community' as...
"a group of people living in a particular city, district, region, etc... as a smaller social unit within a larger one and having interests, work, fellowship, etc... in common...." It's also defined as... "living in friendly association with each other." Sounds like Columbus alright and I think you'll find that we're friendly like small town folks and yet you can have all the conveniences of the big city but without all the hassles like over-crowding, heavy traffic, and bad air. Nice place to visit and you'll probably want to live here.
We may not be a large city but we do have our own song just like the big towns. The official song of Columbus is "Columbus Georgia On My Mind." It was written by Robert (Jody) Powers and adopted by the city council in the mid-1970's. It's basically the old folk song "The Columbus Stockade Blues" with new material added.
"The Columbus Stockade Blues" was first recorded over 80 years ago by Tom Darby and Jimmy Tarlton, local singer-songwriters from Columbus. Both Darby and Tarlton each claimed to have written the song but the fact is large sections of the lyrics sound alot like several other popular folk songs of that time so nobody knows for sure who wrote it or exactly when it was written.
The song has been performed by countless performers over the years and, if you check out the video to the left, you can hear a good rendition of it from a few years back, done by Arlo Guthrie, Donovan, and Hans Theesink.
I recently came across a recording of Elvis talking and fooling around in the studio between takes. Here is a little audio snippet of
